Curtain Call (Part 1)

After graduating college, we all express our (excitement.) Most of the time we sound like this “Watch out world, here I come”, but not all of us see what’s really coming ahead. Those who are not lucky enough might not be showing the “world” what they’re really capable of. In some cases, it might not be luck; maybe the world has its own mind of filtering out what it wants and eliminates the (bad) ones

Mindy is a liberal arts major and an aspiring actress fresh out of college. She came from a middleclass family with 2 other siblings getting ready to enter college. She is engaged to Calvin her boyfriend of 4 1/2 years and plans to get married next year. In this kind of situation, finding a job is essential. She has applied to every job that related to her major, but was rejected one after another. A change of tactic would do her good, so she applied for other jobs. She applied to be in human resource, an assistant, a manager because she has had experience with management and other non – acting related jobs. After 6 months of not having any luck, she ran into Melvin who is one of her close friends who’s in town for his dad’s birthday. They both caught up with each other and mentioned each other’s situation. Mindy found out that Mel moved to New York and has landed an acting role in Broadway

Mindy and Mel have been friends since they were in 3rd grade. They went to high school and college together and even had the same aspirations. Being a fellow actor, they both understood each other. They’ve always had each other’s back. Their friends even thought that they could be a couple. Mel has always been very convincing. He asked Mindy to maybe try New York and see what the city has to offer her. As a good friend, she knows that he’s looking out for her and knows that he had been in the same situation. She decides to think about it.

She knew that she had to pass this decision through her family first especially her fiancée. The next day, she (nervously) drove to his apartment knowing that Calvin won’t be too happy about what she was going to tell him. When she arrived, he greeted her with (enthusiasm.)

Calvin: “So are you excited today?”

Mindy was clueless as to what he was talking about, and just gave him a bewildered reaction.

Calvin: “It’s our 5 year anniversary, did you forget?
Mindy: “I’m so sorry dear; I’ve just been really (stressed out. )I just got out of college, I’m looking for a job, but nobody would hire me. It’s so( frustrating”)
Calvin: “Don’t worry, you’ll get through it. It’s only a matter of time.”
Mindy: “Easy for you to say, you have a career, you’re an engineer, you’ve got everything laid out already.”
Calvin: “I’m just trying to comfort you”
Mindy: “I know”

Mindy didn’t know that he prepared dinner, and planned out the whole evening for (perfection.) She didn’t want to ruin the night, so she put aside her problem and just enjoyed the rest of the day. After dinner, they went to Gateau Maison for wine and dessert. They then decided to take a stroll at the park. Meanwhile, Mindy is still thinking about how she’s going to tell him about New York, and at the same time Melvin happened to be at the park doing his weekend jogging. Mindy sees Mel approaching them, afraid that he might mention his offer to her; she tried to pull Calvin away and ignore Mel. Too late, he already saw Mel, and was waving at him. They laughed and talked, and at the end Mel was in a hurry so they decided to part ways. Mindy was so relieved that he didn’t mention anything about the offer, and just as he was leaving:

Melvin: “Oh, Mindy by the way, have you decided if you want to move to New York?”

Calvin’s face turns from (cheery to baffled.)

Mindy: “Umm, I’ll let you know.”

All of a sudden, a (perfect) night has (turned into gray.) She was not expecting this to happen. She explained to him her situation, and how she might want to try expanding her options. Calvin knows he can’t go with her, and definitely can’t stop her. That night ended in a (sour note. )His hopes of marrying her soon has (crumbled), even the (tiniest flake of imagination has been dissolved.)

Calvin: “I guess we’ll see what happens.”

Mindy left without saying anything.
